North Korea has vowed to launch a military attack on South Korea without any warning if the South continues its anti-North activities.
North Korea's military issued the stark warning on Monday in response to what it said were insults from the "puppet authorities" in the South, AFP reported.
Earlier on Monday, protesters in Seoul burned portraits of North Korea's founder Kim Il-sung, his son Kim Jong-Il, and grandson and current leader Kim Jong-un.
Monday also marked the 101st birth anniversary of Kim Il-sung, a day North Korea reveres as "The Day of the Sun."
"All the service personnel and people of the DPRK (North Korea) are simmering with towering resentment at this monstrous criminal act," the army's supreme command said in a statement.
The statement gave South Korea an "ultimatum" to end its hostile policies towards the North and warned that North Korea would not give any advance notice before attacking the South.
"Our retaliatory action will start without any notice from now as such a thrice-cursed criminal act of hurting the dignity of the supreme leadership of the DPRK is being openly committed in the heart of Seoul under the patronage of the puppet authorities," it said.
The warning followed Pyongyang’s rejection of South Korea's proposal to resolve tensions through dialogue as the North said the offer was “a cunning ploy to hide the South’s policy of confrontation.”
If South Korea really wanted dialogue and negotiations, "they should apologize for all anti-DPRK hostile acts, big and small," North Korea's army supreme command said in another statement on Tuesday.
Tensions sharply heightened after the US dispatched nuclear-capable B-52s and B-2 stealth bombers to participate in joint military drills with South Korea.
The moves prompted Pyongyang to step up its war rhetoric, authorizing its army to launch preemptive nuclear strikes on the US.
North Korea has also said its military should be prepared to attack “all US military bases in the Asia-Pacific region, including the US mainland, Hawaii, and Guam,” in addition to South Korea.
