Ukraine: what remains of Minsk? (Source)
The reality of the country, a varied and fragile nation, traversed by important conflicts, can be hidden for a time by repression and terror, as has been the case these last months. However, these practices do not resolve anything and the problems remain.
But, above all, even the Ukrainian government understands the determining economic role played by relations with Russia until 2013. Without an agreement with Russia, Ukraine cannot hope to recover and reconstruct itself. This, the Russian government also knows. Russia thus knows she is going to win, be it with a Kiev government that becomes progressively more sensitive to her arguments, or be it through the collapse of Ukraine. She would prefer to win at the lowest cost but, be sure of it, she will not skimp on the price to pay for this victory. Let us recall the stanzas of the poem, The Scythians:
Russia is a Sphinx. Rejoicing, grieving, Россия – Сфинкс. Ликуя и скорбя,
And drenched in black blood, И обливаясь черной кровью,
She gazes, gazes, gazes at you… Она глядит, глядит, глядит в тебя…

Hungary first European country to sign up for China Silk Road plan (Source)
The countries’ foreign ministers signed a memorandum of understanding for what is formally known as the “One Belt, One Road” project in Budapest, according to a statement on the Chinese foreign ministry website.
China welcomes more European countries to look East, and strengthen cooperation with China and other Asian countries, and participate in the “One Belt, One Road” in various ways, said Wang Yi, China’s foreign minister, according to a separate statement on the website.
President Xi Jinping said earlier this year he hoped annual trade with the countries involved in Beijing’s plan to create a modern Silk Road would surpass $2.5 trillion in a decade.
Hungary hopes to closely cooperate with China and push on with the Hungarian-Serbia railway and other major construction projects, Hungary’s President Janos Ader was quoted as saying by the Chinese foreign ministry.
China is helping fund and build a railway connecting Hungary and Serbia.
Projects under the plan include a network of railways, highways, oil and gas pipelines, power grids, Internet networks, maritime and other infrastructure links across Central, West and South Asia to as far as Greece, Russia and Oman, increasing China’s connections to Europe and Africa.

The US is playing with fire by instigating a military standoff off Russian and Chinese borders, while neither the South China Sea nor Ukraine can be considered America’s backyards; Washington needs to understand that neither Russia nor China will accept its vassalage status, according to the Spanish newspaper La Vanguardia.
South China Sea not a US political playfield (Source)
Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe recently said he would raise the issue of China’s construction work in the South China Sea at the G7 summit in Bavaria, Germany, on June-7-8. Before that, US Secretary of Defense Ashton Carter had said China’s reclamation work in the South China Sea was “out of step” and required “an immediate end”, and threatened to send more US ships and aircraft to patrol the areas nearby, to which, Beijing responded saying Washington should adopt a responsible attitude and play a constructive role in the region.
China has been emphasizing that its construction work will help make navigation safer in the South China Sea. But instead of paying heed to China’s assertions, the US is tacitly supporting Vietnam and the Philippines in the South China Sea disputes because its intention is to contain China. No wonder, it has turned a blind eye to similar construction activities of Vietnam and the Philippines in the South China Sea for the past several years.
With Washington misjudging Beijing’s strategic intentions and calling it “aggressive”, Hanoi and Manila have taken an even tougher stance against Beijing. Because of a similar misjudgment, Washington stubbornly opposed the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank for which it is likely to incur huge losses. And now it faces a similar situation in the South China Sea issue.
True, China has been following a more proactive maritime policy in recent years. But that doesn’t mean its defense policy has become aggressive. It has not raised any new maritime claims, for its policy is focused on responding to neighboring countries’ provocations, which include the “nationalization” of the disputed Diaoyu Islands by Japan and the attack on Chinese fishermen by the Philippines. Besides, China’s moves have been bilateral rather than unilateral in nature, as it seeks coordination with ASEAN member states.
China’s moves are aimed at thwarting the Philippines and Vietnam from further violating its territorial integrity and maritime rights. The small size of a country does not prevent it from using aggressive means against bigger countries – think about Japan’s attack on Pearl Harbor that ultimately dragged the US into World War II.
The US has been accusing China of violating international laws. But the fact is, China has signed and ratified the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, something the US has refused to do for fear of losing its maritime primacy across the globe. More important, since the UNCLOS is not designed to solve historical or current sovereignty disputes, China has the right to refuse international arbitration in the South China Sea issue, which the Philippines has unilaterally sought.
As a matter of fact, if disputing states fail to reach an agreement or develop mutual trust, neither international law nor arbitration in the international court can settle the dispute. On the contrary, such an attempt could worsen the problem. For this reason China has always emphasized the importance of using bilateral means to settle a dispute between two states. For the same reason the US selectively ratifies international laws according to its own interests.
But when it comes to issues related to China, the US is misled by anti-China “experts”. By misjudging China’s strategic intentions, the US has already created enough obstacles for the healthy development of bilateral relations. And by thinking China is out to grab territories, which is impossible in today’s world of highly interdependent countries, the US is building more hurdles in bilateral relations.
But one thing is for certain, China is determined to safeguard its territorial integrity and sovereignty. And for that, it has the right to draw the red line.
The US should learn lessons from the failure of its covert involvement in the Syria and Ukraine crises. It must realize that there is always a price to be paid for intervening in other countries’ affairs, and South China Sea is not a good playfield for practicing power politics.

The geopolitics of American global decline — Washington vs. China in the 21st century(Source)
It might have been the most influential single sentence of that era: “In these circumstances it is clear that the main element of any United States policy toward the Soviet Union must be that of long-term, patient but firm and vigilant containment of Russian expansive tendencies.” And it originated in an 8,000 word telegram — yes, in those days, unbelievably enough, there was no email, no Internet, no Snapchat, no Facebook — sent back to Washington in February 1946 by George F. Kennan, the U.S. chargé d’affaires in Moscow, at a moment when the Cold War between the United States and the Soviet Union was just gaining traction.
The next year, a reworked version of Kennan’s “Long Telegram” with that sentence would be published as “The Sources of Soviet Conduct” in the prestigious magazine Foreign Affairs under the pseudonym “Mr. X” (though it was common knowledge in Washington who had written it). From that moment on, “containment” of what, until the Sino-Soviet split, was called the Soviet bloc, would be Washington’s signature foreign and military policy of the era. The idea was to ring the Soviet Union and China with bases and then militarily, economically, and diplomatically hem in a gaggle of communist states from Hungary and Czechoslovakia in Eastern Europe to North Korea on the Pacific and from Siberia south to the Central Asian SSRs of the Soviet Union. In other words, much of the Eurasian land mass.
And then, when the Berlin Wall came down in 1989 and the Soviet Union collapsed and disappeared from the face of the Earth in 1991, that was that. Along with the former Communist world, containment as policy was dispatched to the dustbin of history — or was it? Strangely enough, as historian and TomDispatch regular Alfred McCoy points out today, if you look at Washington’s military bases (which, if anything, were expanded in the post-Soviet era), its conflicts, and the focus of its foreign policy, American attempts to “contain” the heartlands of Eurasia, especially Russia and China, have never ended. Given the passage of almost a quarter of a century since the Cold War era, the map of those garrisons and the conflicts that go with them still looks eerily familiar.
And here’s an even stranger thing, as McCoy again makes clear: the U.S. was not the first imperial power to put its energy into “containing” Eurasia. In 1945, when World War II ended with Great Britain and its empire hollowed out and in a state of exhaustion, the U.S. inherited a no-name version of “containment” policy from the British before Kennan even thought to use the term. It’s odd to realize that “containment” as imperial policy has a history that is now, in a sense, more than two centuries old. It’s strange enough, in fact, that McCoy turns his attention to the subject to help make sense of the edgy U.S.-China relationship for the rest of this century.

The new Russian torpedo: ‘Skhval’ 2.0? (Source)
Modernization of the Russian armed forces has made it to the shores of the sea. After a programme to augment combat capabilities of the Il-38 anti-submarine aircraft and announcement of plans to upgrade equipment on the Tu-142 aircraft and Ka-27 helicopters, the next step is to design completely new anti-submarine weaponry. Updating radio-electronic components of aircraft will ensure reliability of the search for enemy submarines, and new torpedoes will hasten their annihilation. So, what will the new Russian torpedo be like?

Turkey election: Turks don’t live by bread alone (Source)
Devoid of the checks and balances that are essential for running a minority government, and the absence of consensus politics, the “stability” that the single party rule provided tended to breed authoritarianism and highhandedness, and eventually massive scale of corruption. Independent Long-Range Strike: A Failed Theory (Source)
It is only long-range, independent strike that has consistently failed to deliver promised results. It makes no sense to dedicate a high percentage of our limited procurement resources to a capability that has provided so little return. As President Lincoln famously noted, “The dogmas of the quiet past, are inadequate to the stormy present.” It is time to abandon the dogma of independent, long-range strike, a theory which has failed in practice for over 90 years. In its place, we must focus our future force structure on those missions where the extraordinary capabilities of airpower have succeeded.

No, Iran Isn’t Destabilizing the Middle East (Source)
As the nuclear negotiations with Iran enter what may be their final lap, diehard opponents of any agreement with Tehran have been leaning more heavily than ever on the theme that Iran is a nasty actor in the Middle East intent on doing all manner of nefarious things in the region. Insofar as the theme is not just an effort to generate distaste for having any dealings with the Iranian regime and purports to have a connection with the nuclear agreement, the idea is that the sanctions relief that will be part of the agreement will give Iran more resources to do still more nefarious stuff in the region.

Turkish Voters Slap Erdogan (Source)
Erdogan loses the parliament election in Turkey. With some 95% of the votes counted the results (seats) are:
AKP 41.5% (261)
CHP 25.3% (130)
MHP 16.7% (84)
HDP 12.0% (75)
Erdogans AKP lost nearly 9% compared to the last election. The Kurdish HDP jumped above the 10% limit and thereby prevents the AKP from ruling as the sole party. The AKP will have to arrange a coalition with the hard nationalist MHP to form a new government.
The reasons for the loss were the end of the credit fueled economic boom that the AKP had engineered since 2000. There was also a lot of infighting within the AKP and Erdogan’s policy of fueling the war in Syria is quite unpopular.
Any coalition government the AKP may arrange will likely be less aggressive than the current one. It is doubtful that the current prime minister Davutoglu, the very aggressive promoter of a new Ottoman empire, will keep his position.
Erdogan as a politician is now wounded and the AKP is weakened. This will lead to more infighting within the AKP and maybe even a split of the party into several fractions. In all this result will likely leave less capacity in Turkey for wide ranging geopolitical adventures.

INF Threatened: Back to Worst Days of Cold War? (Source)
For America nuclear strikes against Russia are unthinkable anyway because it would guarantee a disastrous on response against the territory of the continental USA. The danger of miscalculations and miscommunications leading to all-out war will be immensely heightened.
Washington cannot present compelling evidence of the Russian violation, the United States could be seen by the world as the party that killed the INF Treaty. The U.S. military currently has no intermediate-range missiles ready for deployment at its disposal. Such missiles would take years to design and build taking funds from other pressing defense priorities. The implementation of plans would inevitably create political problems as the opposition will be strong in the countries to host the weapons. It makes the endeavor a tall order.
The whole thing has a certain Cold War ring. It would most certainly worsen the bilateral US-Russian relationship, which is already at a low point. It is bound to further complicate the prospects of additional reductions of nuclear weapons. The plans could hamper President Obama’s efforts to win congressional support for his Iran policy.

Moscow and Baku have many subjects to discuss, which include regional conflicts, combating cross-border terrorism, and expanding trade and economic cooperation. Why Putin’s meeting with the Pope ruffled the West (Source)
Vladimir Putin and Pope Francis are popular figures who impact people’s thoughts, and their meeting in the Vatican represented a reunification of Western and Eastern worlds, Ukrainian journalist Halyna Mokrushyna told RT’s In the Now.
RT: Why did the US ambassador to the Holy See Kenneth Hackett call on the Vatican for a tougher stance on Russia ahead of Vladimir Putin’s meeting with Pope Francis? What would the Pope’s condemnation of Russia really change?
Halyna Mokrushyna: Because we should not forget that France and Italy, two members of the G7, are to a large extent, still Catholic countries, so the Pope’s condemnation of so-called “Russian aggression” would add to this mainstream popular narrative that Russia is an aggressor in this war and it’s important for the US to have the Catholic Church support it in that regard, in my opinion.
RT: What does it mean, in your opinion, if it doesn’t get this support of the Washington position?
HM: I think the Pope’s position is very moderate and temperate in this regard, because the church should stay out of this conflict. And that is the position also of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the so-called Moscow Patriarchate. I hope that Pope Francis will remain on this position because he is right: It is a civil war and the Church should not be involved in that conflict in a country like Ukraine where the religious cleavage is deep.
RT: The Pope always gets a lot of media attention, Putin gets a lot of media attention, and when you put two together it’s an immediate storm. Why is there so much attention from mainstream media?
HM: Because, as you said, the Pope is a very popular figure and Putin is a very popular figure. As I said before, the Pope is a representative of a very powerful social institution, which is the Catholic Church, so whatever he does or says has a big impact on people’s thoughts and Catholic parishioners across the world. Putin, of course, is the most popular leader, or one of the most according … to Time, so it is quite understandable. Especially the Pope represents the Western world, and Putin represents the Eastern world.
RT: Putin met with Italy’s Prime minister ahead of his visit to the Vatican where he was asked about Russia’s relations with the G7. The Russian President said that Russia doesn’t have any relations with the G7, and that it is not really an organization, but just a membership club. Why are we hearing this sort of rhetoric now?
HM: Because from what I’ve been following Russia really tried all the diplomatic means to solve this crisis. Russia used all platforms of international cooperation that are available out there and frankly it didn’t work, so that’s why we have this deep disappointment on Russia’s behalf. The G7 is about one unified position in terms of the war in Ukraine… [There are] complaints, I guess, because it comes from the realization that this is a group of countries who represent the same mono-polar world, and they don’t’ want to hear an alternative opinion.

A quiet meeting this past March in Saudi Arabia, and a recent anonymous leak from the Israeli military, set the stage for what may be a new and wider war in the Middle East.
Gathering in the Saudi Arabian capital of Riyadh were Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, newly crowned Saudi King Salman, and the organizer of the get-together, the emir of Qatar. The meeting was an opportunity for Turkey and the Saudis to bury a hatchet over Ankara’s support — which Riyadh’s opposes — to the Muslim Brotherhood, and to agree to cooperate in overthrowing the Syrian government of Bashar al-Assad.

G-7 has its own designs on South China Sea (Source)
The G-7 leaders issued a communique at the close of their summit at Adolf Hitler’s favorite Bavarian retreat of Garmisch-Partenkirchen that vilified China for its claims to islands in the energy-rich South China Sea. The G-7 leaders stated, «We strongly oppose the use of intimidation, coercion or force, as well as any unilateral actions that seek to change the status quo, such as large-scale land reclamation.» What the G-7 leaders failed to mention is that four members of the elite group, the United States, Britain, France, and Japan, have used proxies like the Philippines, Malaysia, Vietnam, Indonesia, Taiwan and the former Republic of Vietnam (South Vietnam) to fortify island possessions in the South China Sea. The G-7 statement was yet another display of the gross hypocrisy of the group as previously evidenced by their sanctions against Russia, Syria, Iran, and other countries.
President Obama in his military «pivot to Asia» seems to believe that an increased ground, naval, and air presence by the United States in East and Southeast Asia should go unnoticed by regional powers like China. China’s modest naval and infrastructure consolidation on the Paracels and Spratlys are a direct response to aggressive American moves in the region, a strategy that began in 1974 with the U.S.-backed South Vietnamese foray into the Paracels. Recently, a U.S. Navy P-8A Poseidon patrol aircraft flew over Fiery Cross Reef as part of a Pentagon policy of taking «concrete steps» in the region. If the amateur armchair generals and admirals in Washington and Honolulu are fretting over China’s increasing profile in the South China Sea, they have only themselves and their «concrete steps» to blame.

The Final Clampdown: What is Holding It? (Source)
In order to have the capabilities, and the confidence to be able to blunt the strike of the ruling dynasty – The Final Clampdown, with all of its enormous organizational structure and might, and hope to win, there must have to be some very capable, experienced and well connected – rather, well entrenched, people at the core of the opposition.
