RUSSIA’S MILITARY MAP – OCT. 16, 2015

Executive Summary

While Russia’s air campaign against Islamist militants in Syria is continuing and even stepping up the pace of attacks (now with attack helicopters entering into the fray), the heightened level of military activity in the Southern Military District and the upsurge in materiel deliveries, both to the Syrian military and to the Russian contingent in Syria, suggests that Russia is weighing the possibility of an increased ground participation in the fighting to support Bashar al-Assad’s government. Some on-the-ground participation is already evident, in the form of TOS-1A Solntsepyok armored flamethrowers and apparently also heavy MRLs.

Elsewhere the Russian military is continuing its modernization programs that increase the quantity of modern weapon systems in its inventory, including of many of the weapons that have proved their worth in the Syria fight.

Strategic Forces

1. The seventh Borey-class SSBN to be laid down in December 2015

Location: Severodvinsk

The ship will be named Aleksandr III.

2. Yars regiment exercise

Location: Tagil

This will be the first command-and-staff exercise of a regiment fully equipped with the new Yars road-mobile multi-warhead ICBM.

Ground/Airborne Forces

3. TOS-1A Solntsepyok deployed to Syria

As predicted in last week’s edition of RMM, the exercises in the Southern Military District were a prelude to a deployment of a ground component to Syria. It includes an unspecified number of TOS-1A systems which are particularly useful in destroying heavily fortified defensive positions.

4. Army Aviation Mi-24 attack helicopters in action in Syria

The helicopters were used to destroy islamist positions along the routes of advance of the Syrian army.

5. Mi-28N deployed to Latakia

An unspecified number of these helicopters was delivered by An-124 and Il-76 airlifters. The Mi-28N is better suited to operate at night and during inclement weather than the Mi-24, which makes it less vulnerable to shoulder-fired SAMs which as a rule are not nearly as effective at night.

6. Russian heavy rocket artillery in Syria?

A number of recent videos have shown rocket artillery bombardments which appear to have been delivered by Uragan or Smerch systems which use rockets with large cluster payloads, as shown on the video above, rather than 122mm Grad systems. Heavy MRLs may be another part of the Russian ground component in Syria.

7. Attack and transport helicopters deployed to Tajikistan

A mixed squadron of Mi-24 and Mi-8 machines has been deployed to the vicinity of Dushanbe to support the 201st Military Base. The deployment appears to be motivated by concerns about growing Islamic State activity in Afghanistan and Central Asia.

8. Stealth treatments for Russian armored vehicles

Location: Chelyabinsk Region

The Ground Forces are testing a range of surface treatments intended to greatly reduce the thermal and radar signature of its armored vehicles.

9. T-72B3 delivered to a Transbaikal motorized rifle unit

The heavily upgraded T-72B3 model replaces older-model tanks

10. Eastern Military District receives 200 Ratnik sets

Location: Khabarovsk

The sets were delivered to a special operations unit headquartered in Khabarovsk.

11. BTR-82AM delivered to units stationed in Abkhazia

Location: Abkhazia

A total of 30 vehicles, or a battalion set, were delivered.

12. Abkhazia-based motorized rifle brigade general inspection

Location: Vladikavkaz

The inspection is intended to examine the unit’s combat readiness, preparedness, and morale. The brigade is equipped with some of the most advanced weapons currently in service with the Russian military, including T-90 MBTs, BMP-3 IFVs, and 2S19 SP howitzers.

13. Joint exercise in Armenia

Location: Kamkhud and Alagyaz, Armenia

The exercise involved Russian and Armenian battalion battlegroups supported by aviation.

14. Contract soldier assessment, Chechnya

Location: Gvardeets, Kalinovskiy

The contract soldiers stationed in the Republic of Chechnya are undergoing their annual assessment, which includes demonstrating their skills in operating their assigned heavy weapons such as T-72B3 MBTs, BTR-82AM IFVs, 2S3 SP howitzers.

15. Army Aviation exercise in Krasnodar Region

Location: Krasnodar

10 Mi-35 attack helicopters carried out live-fire training against a simulated terrorist/insurgent concentration.

16. 136th Motorized Rifle Brigade exercise

Location: Buynaksk, Dagestan

The full brigade was engaged in an simulated operation aimed at rooting out a sizable terrorist/insurgent presence in a mountainous region.

Air/Space Forces

17. More Su-30SM delivered

Location: Millerovo, Rostov Region

The three brand-new fighter aircraft were delivered to the 31st Fighter Aviation Regiment based in Millerovo.

18. Scientific Companies yield results

Location: Krasnogorsk

The so-called “scientific companies” represent military units composed of draftees with special technical skills that may be used to design or improve new or existing weapon systems. The Space Forces scientific company stationed in Krasnogorsk developed the PUO-1 and PKG-2 day/night holographic sights which are currently in production for the Russian armed forces.

19. The air operation over Syria continues

Russian aircraft are flying between 40 and 90 missions at all times of the day, supporting Syrian (and possibly soon Kurdish and Iranian) ground troops as well as striking islamist command and supply infrastructure targets.

20. Su-25SM exercise in Krasnodar

Location: Krasnodar

The attack aviation regiment based in the Southern Military District carried out training bombing missions very similar to what their counterparts are performing in Syria: attacking concentrations of terrorists and their infrastructure.

Naval Forces

21. Admiral Kuznetsov returns to service

Location: Murmansk

The ship has undergone a three-month refit and modernization. It is expected to put out to sea in the upcoming weeks–no information on whether its travels will take it to the Mediterranean…

22. Submarine Kalibr launch

The submarine was a Project 636.3 Rostov-na-Donu diesel electric boat of the Northern Fleet. Kalibr family missiles can be launched from standard 533mm torpedo tubes, which means most Russian submarines are capable of carrying these weapons.

23. Ivan Gren trials begin

Following its pier-side trials, the new-generation amphibious assault ship will undergo sea trials starting in November.

24. Admiral Grigorovich firing trials

Location: Kaliningrad

Admiral Grigorovich is undergoing its sea trials prior to acceptance and eventual transfer to the Black Sea Fleet.

International

25. “Syria Express” is continuing its operations

Location: Novorossiysk

Equipment being loaded onto Russian amphibious ships heading for Syria includes T-72B MBTs and BMP-2 IFVs, presumably with the intent to replenish Syria’s armored vehicle fleet which has been greatly worn down by several years of heavy fighting.

26. “Syria Express” Volume Expansion

Location: Novosibirsk, Sevastopol

The Russian Navy procured 8 former Turkish cargo vessels in order to handle the vastly increased cargo volumes of military assistance deliveries to Syria.

Why States Still Use Barrel Bombs

Smoke ascends after a Syrian military helicopter allegedly dropped a barrel bomb over the city of Daraya on Jan. 31.(FADI DIRANI/AFP/Getty Images) Summary Barrel bombs are not especially effective weapons. They are often poorly constructed; they fail to detonate more often than other devices constructed for a similar purpose; and their lack of precision means they can have a disproportionate effect on civilian populations. However, combatants continue to use barrel bombs in conflicts, including in recent and ongoing conflicts in Africa and the Middle East, and they are ideally suited to the requirements of resource-poor states. Analysis Barrel bombs are improvised devices that contain explosive filling and shrapnel packed into a container, often in a cylindrical shape such as a barrel. The devices continue to be dropped on towns all over Syria . Indeed, there have been several documented cases of their use in Iraq over the past months, and residents of the city of Mosul, which was re

Russia Looks East for New Oil Markets

Click to Enlarge In the final years of the Soviet Union, Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev began orienting his foreign policy toward Asia in response to a rising Japan. Putin has also piloted a much-touted pivot to Asia, coinciding with renewed U.S. interest in the area. A good expression of intent was Russia's hosting of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in 2012 in Vladivostok, near Russia's borders with China and North Korea. Although its efforts in Asia have been limited by more direct interests in Russia's periphery and in Europe, Moscow recently has been able to look more to the east. Part of this renewed interest involves finding new export markets for Russian hydrocarbons. Russia's economy relies on energy exports, particularly crude oil and natural gas exported via pipeline to the West. However, Western Europe is diversifying its energy sources as new supplies come online out of a desire to reduce its dependence on Russian energy supplies . This has

LONDON POLICE INDIRECTLY ENCOURAGE CRIMINALS TO ATTACK RUSSIAN DIPLOMATIC PROPERTY

ILLUSTRATIVE IMAGE A few days ago an unknown perpetrator trespassed on the territory of the Russian Trade Delegation in London, causing damage to the property and the vehicles belonging to the trade delegation , Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said during the September 12 press briefing. The diplomat revealed the response by the London police was discouraging. Police told that the case does not have any prospects and is likely to be closed. This was made despite the fact that the British law enforcement was provided with video surveillance tapes and detailed information shedding light on the incident. By this byehavior, British law inforcements indirectly encourage criminals to continue attacks on Russian diplomatic property in the UK. Zakharova’s statement on “Trespassing on the Russian Trade Mission premises in London” ( source ): During our briefings, we have repeatedly discussed compliance with the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, specif
