Syrian Army routes ISIS at Deir Ezzor Airport

DAMASCUS, SYRIA (3:10 A.M.) - The Islamic State of Iraq and Al-Sham (ISIS) launched another powerful assault at the Deir Ezzor Airport on Sunday, targeting the southern gates of this strategic military installation. ISIS began the assault by launching two different attacks from two different axes, striking the Syrian Arab Army's defenses at both the Al-Jafra Farms and southern perimeter of the Deir Ezzor Military Airport. According to a military source at the Deir Ezzor Airport, the Syrian Arab Army quickly repelled the assault at the Al-Jafra Farms after destroying an armed bulldozer and BMP tank with their anti-tank guided missiles (ATGM). The military source added that the Syrian Armed Forces engaged the Islamic State terrorists for nearly four hours at the southern perimeter of the airport, killing more than 20 militants during the battle. This latest attack on Sunday was the terrorist group's 3rd attempt this week to breach the Syrian Arab Army's defenses at the Deir E

'It's a hell of a lot of fun to shoot some people': Meet Donald Trump's likely defense secretary

'You go into Afghanistan, you got guys who slap women around for five years because they didn't wear a veil. You know, guys like that ain't got no manhood left anyway. So it's a hell of a lot of fun to shoot them' The retired four-star general would need a waiver to be eligible as he has not been out of uniform for seven years Getty Donald Trump has signaled that retired general James Mattis is a likely pick for the top job of secretary of defense. Mr Trump called him "James Mad Dog Mattis" and told reporters he was "the real deal", tweeting praise about the retired general after an hour-long meeting on Saturday. Mr Mattis served 44 years, rising through the ranks of Marine Corps, and led a task force into southern Afghanistan in 2001 as well as a Marine division during the Iraq invasion in 2003. The four-star general was praised for leading Marines in the 2004 battle of Falluja in Iraq, described as one of the bloodiest of the war. The follo

THE U.S. NUCLEAR DETERRENT TRIAD. CAN THE U.S. AFFORD TO MODERNIZE IT?

The defense budget of the United States stands at roughly ten times the amount of its closest rival in real terms. With more than seven hundred military facilities around the globe, and direct and indirect armed interventions in a number of countries in the Middle East and Africa the armed forces of the United States are consuming vast amounts of money. When one adds in the significant amounts of waste inherent in the military industrial complex, the grand scale of the Department of Defense budget for 2016 in the amount of $521.7 billion has still left military planners and defense industry lobbyists bemoaning it as insufficient. It has recently been argued that the advancements and achievements by both Russia and China in modernizing their military capabilities over the past decade have caught the U.S. military establishment off guard. This is up to debate; however, the fact remains that the only real potential adversaries of the U.S. have exponentially improved their military force

The Russian Navy Is Back

By Eric Margolis Russia’s dispatch of a ten-ship flotilla to the Syrian Coast has raised some outrage and sneers aplenty in the West. Particularly when one of its embarked MiG-29K fighters crashed on takeoff from Russia’s sole carrier, the obsolescent Admiral Kuznetsov which lacks catapults. Joining Kuznetsov are believed to be two ‘Akula’ class nuclear-powered attack submarines that are much feared by Western navies. On the surface will be the powerful, missile-armed battle-cruiser, ‘Peter the Great.’ Unlike Western warships, which are essentially fragile tin cans packed with electronics, `Peter the Great’ is armored and built to withstand punishment. Other Russian missile frigates and supply ships are also off Syria. Washington just hates it when the Russians dare do what the US has been doing since World War II: conduct gunboat diplomacy, however limited. As a student of Russian naval affairs, I’m watching the current deployment of warships from the Red Banner Northern Fleet with m

TU-95 BOMBERS USE NEW KH-101 CRUISE MISSILES IN SYRIA (VIDEO)

The Russian Aerospace Forces have used the new Kh-101 cruise missiles against terrorists in Syria for the first time. The Tupolev Tu-95 strategic bomber (Photo: Air Team Images / Artyom Anikeev) The Russian Defense Ministry published a video of missile strikes of the Tu-95MS strategic bombers on positions of Syrian terrorists. This is the first official evidence of usage of the new Kh-101 cruise missiles. Before that, only the Tu-160 heavy strategic bombers used these weapons. The Kh-101 missile is one and half meters longer than standard weapons of the Tu-95 , the Kh-55 cruise missile, and does not fit in its weapons bay. For this reason, the bomber, showed on the video, were carrying two missiles on its external suspension (we can see this on the 14th second of the video). In all, judging by the number of carrying piers, the upgraded aircraft can carry up to eight Kh-101 (six Kh-55 can be charged into a cylindrical launching device). The Kh-101 is a high-precision long-ran
